Tornadoes in Chicago: Ravens vs Bears

The Ravens are off to a solid start in Chicago, however fans have been asked to vacate their seats and players and camera crews are also being told to seek cover due to tornadoes in the Chicago area. The game is currently suspended. Hopefully everyone stays safe, the weather passes and the game resumes soon. I got my $5.99 large Dominos Carry Out pizza and I’m ready for some football!

Reading Magazines on a Mac with Zinio

I really like Next Issue, the app that I’d describe as the Netflix for Magazines (pay $9.99-14.99 a month for unlimited access to its library of magazines), however it’s available on iOS but not Mac. Also the Windows 8 app doesn’t allow you to zoom very far which makes some of the magazines difficult to read.

Today I started using Zinio which is available for Mac (as well as iOS, PC and other platforms). You can also access your magazines through a web browser if you’re away from your Mac and can’t download the software. You can subscribe to 3 magazines for $5 a month via the Z-Pass service (you get a free 30 day trial as well) and you can subscribe to additional magazines if you wish at mostly affordable rates.

Both the web reader and Mac app offer a great reading experience on the Mac and I look forward to checking out some more magazines with it. The Z-pass selection seems adequate and includes a great many popular magazines. Right now I’m using 2 out of my 3 magazines for Macworld and Wired. Other notable publications include Newsweek, Cosmopolitan, Maxim, PC World, Road & Track and many more.

You get more bang for your buck with Next Issue, but Zinio definitely offers the better desktop reading experience and of course being available on Macs is a plus.

So far I can recommend the service, it’s affordable and convenient. Until Newstand comes to Mac it’ll have to do.

PS4 delayed (at AAFES BX)

The Bx was supposed to start handing out tickets to buy the PS4 tomorrow, however it appears the console will not be shipping to the Bx in the near future. I’m not sure if it’s just Mountain Home or if other bases are having this problem as well. I knew a few people who wanted to try to buy a PS4 tomorrow, but it looks like they’ll be out of luck.

I’m still leaning toward an Xbox One, however I won’t be getting either for awhile yet. So far it seems the PS4 launch has been a bit rocky as many users are reporting bricked consoles (for those who got theirs early via Taco Bell or other venues that shipped early). We’ll have to wait and see what happens tomorrow.

Hearthstone Beta Key

So I have a Hearthstone Beta Key that I don’t think I’m going to use. I’ve seen a lot selling on eBay and was thinking of getting rid of my closed beta key. I’d be interested in any offers (PayPal, Steam games, etc.) in exchange for the beta key.

Boise’s Westside Drive In

westside drive in

One of my favorite places to eat in Boise is the Westside Drive In which has been featured in Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (video below). The food is amazing as are the milkshakes. Last night I had the Special Deluxe burger (1/4lb patty, special sauce, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar, slice of ham) and potato gems with fry sauce. It was absolutely delicious!

If you ever find yourself in Boise I highly recommend you swing by the Westside Drive In and give the food and shakes a try, you won’t regret it!

Go Arsenal!

The Ravens may not be performing well, but at least my English football favorite Arsenal are. The league leaders take on #8 Manchester United at Old Trafford. It’s live on NBC Sports Network (DISH channel 159), 0-0 4 minutes in.

The Village / Village Cinemas at Meridian and why reserved seating sucks

Yesterday Vanessa and I went out to Meridian to check out the new shopping center, The Village at Meridian. Its design is pretty cool and it feels more like a park or college campus than a shopping center. The signature feature is the fountain that is synchronized to music and lights at night. It’s surrounded by tables and a few fire pits which make for a great atmosphere to relax in.

We were planning to see Thor 2 at the Village Cinemas and we decided to go to the 4:30 showing. The movie theater is absolutely beautiful and very stylish. We arrived at 4PM to buy our tickets. The theater has reserved seating, and when we were buying our tickets the only seats left with two side by side seats were in rows D and up. We figured the screen would be far enough back that we could still enjoy seeing the movie in row D. Unfortunately when we got into the theater it was clear there would be no way we could enjoy the movie that close to the screen. What annoyed us most was the theater was almost entirely empty when we got in there and we really should’ve been able to sit where we wanted.

We ended up heading back to the box office to get our money back. Reserved seating in a movie theater is a very bad idea. I don’t very often plan hours ahead of time to see a movie, so it’s not practical to buy tickets online hours before a movie starts. Plans often change, or people often decide to join at the last minute. Reserved seating ruins the traditional movie going experience.

One of the newer movie theaters back where I’m from in Pennsylvania had reserved seating when it first opened, but it quickly learned it was a bad idea. People complained, got refunds or blatantly ignored the assigned seating and sat in other people’s seats often causing problems as the movies were starting. I can only hope Village Cinema in Meridian will learn how undesirable their reserved seating is and end the policy soon. Until then we’ll stick with Edwards in Boise.
